Food and Light Workshop 2011

Well folks, this is quite an honor to announce this. Every year there is a very special food photography workshop in Boulder Colorado setup by the lovely Jen Yu and Todd Porter and Diane Cu. You might know them better by their blogs – Jen Yu is UseRealButter and Todd and Diane from WhiteonRiceCouple. I am sure they need no introductions from me.

These three are easily some of my favorite food photographers of this time. Each of them a well honed professional in food photography, having shot for publications, cookbooks, websites, restaurants, and I whole lot more. Just when you wanted to hate them for being so bloody talented – there is more. They are some of the most genuine, warmhearted people you will ever come across. Perhaps the greatest thing of all (especially for everyone else) is that they LOVE to teach, and they do it really darn well.

So imagine my surprise and delight when I got an email from them a little while ago asking if I wanted to be a co-instructor with them for this years 2 day Food and Light Workshop in Boulder!!!!!

Now, I know a fun time when I see one, so I could hardly email back “YES!!” fast enough. Knowing Jen, Todd and Diane well I know that this is going to be an above and beyond event full of learning, fun, food and photography. I am so happy to be a part of it this year!

What I love about this class is it’s relatively different approach. It is VERY hands on. YES, you get the “this is F Stop, this is ISO, and this is what it all does” lectures that even seasoned pro’s could learn from – but you also get a ridiculous amount of hands on shooting time with us instructors.

Here is thing – we could sit there all day and give lectures on the technical aspects of photography. We could also do shooting demo’s where we show everyone how we shoot food. This is all well and good, but until you really pick up that dSLR of yours and start shooting for yourself, there is only so much you can learn. That is what this class is about. A lot of shooting time, with the instructors constantly there offering advice, support, and a much deserved pat on the back.

If I do say so myself, we are lovely group of instructors, with a lot of varied interests. Whilst shooting why not ask Jen if “REALLY -25F in the winter is fun in Colorado, where you can throw a glass of boiling water in to the air and see it evaporate instantly“. Why not ask Todd and Diane if you can ever have too many fruit trees? Ask me about moldy sausage if you want to (at your own risk..).

So – anyhow. This class is going to be incredible. A one of a kind learning experience where all participants are going to go away with a lot more experience of shooting food, and with some great memories of a very fun couple of days.

Here is the info on the class:
